Readiness: Custom build Concept demo

Who it is for

Built for

A good fit

Community, commercial and online radio stations, from a volunteer-run community station with one part-time manager to a commercial station with producers, a sales team and a roster of presenters. It suits station managers who want the schedule to run the site, producers who publish listen-again straight after a show, presenters who want to update their own page and playlist, sales staff who rotate sponsors without asking a developer, and listeners who want the stream to keep playing while they browse.

Also worth knowing

It is less suited to podcast networks, which publish episodes to directories through feeds rather than a live schedule, and to video channels, which need a programme catalogue and a video pipeline. Both have their own packages. Stations whose playout system exposes metadata in an unusual format, or with several streams and sub-brands, should look at the custom service first.

The operational problem it solves

How it runs, step by step

The breakfast presenter arrives at six and the site already says so: the schedule has moved to the breakfast slot, the player bar shows the show name and presenter, and the now-playing feed from the playout system updates the current track under the play button.

  1. A listener opens the site on the bus, presses play, and reads the competition page and the weekend schedule while the stream carries on.

  2. She enters the competition; the entry is stored with the time and the rules version in force.

At ten the producer ends the recording, trims it in the browser, and publishes the first hour as a listen-again segment on the show page, set to expire in thirty days as station policy requires.

  1. A request comes in through the form for the afternoon show and lands in the studio queue, where the afternoon presenter sees it on the studio screen.

  2. In the afternoon a new volunteer presenter logs in for the first time and updates her show photo and description; she cannot see anyone else's shows.

  3. In the evening the stream host has an outage, the player switches to the fallback stream, and the station manager hears about it only from the log.

  4. On Friday the sales manager swaps the weekend sponsor on the schedule page from the sponsor slots screen.

Features

What the package does

The package is arranged as modules that follow the broadcast day: player and streams, schedule and shows, listen-again and now-playing, and listener interaction. Each module below lists what it does; the comparison table shows which package variant includes it.

Content and editorial

  • Persistent audio playerThe stream keeps playing as listeners move between pages, so browsing the site never interrupts the radio.
  • Stream URL management with fallbackManage the address of your stream from the admin area, with a fallback to use if the main one fails.
  • Show pages with playlistsEach show has its own page with presenter details and the playlists from recent episodes.
  • Listen-again segments with expiryRecorded segments can be heard again for a window you set, after which they are withdrawn.

Listings and search

  • Programme schedule with on-air-nowThe weekly schedule lists shows and presenters and highlights what is on air at the moment.

Accounts and permissions

  • Presenter accounts for their own showsPresenters sign in to edit only their own show pages and playlists.

Forms and requests

  • Song requests and shout-outs queueListeners send requests and shout-outs through a form, and the studio works through them from a queue.
  • Competitions with entry rules and drawRun a competition with stated entry rules, a closing date and a draw of the winner.

Catalogue and checkout

  • Advertiser and sponsor slotsReserve places in each template for advertisers and sponsors of the station.

Integrations

  • Now-playing track feedShow the current track on the site, taken from a playout system the project supports.

Ownership, maintenance and pricing

After the build

Deployment and ownership

The package runs on your hosting or on hosting we manage, chosen in the proposal and changeable later. You own the code and your content. Show pages, presenter profiles, listen-again recordings and competition records can be exported at any time, and the stream itself stays with your stream host under your own account.

Maintenance

Maintenance is optional and scoped separately. When taken, it covers security updates to the platform and its dependencies, monitoring of the stream fallback, the now-playing feed and listen-again expiry, backups, and a monthly window for small configuration changes such as a schedule reshuffle or a new sponsor slot. Larger changes are quoted as change requests.

Pricing model

Priced per proposal.

The package is sold as a one-off setup and customisation with optional monthly maintenance and hosting as separate recurring lines. The setup figure depends on the number of shows and presenters, the stream host and playout system involved, the add-ons chosen, how much existing content is migrated and whether you host it yourself. Audio storage for listen-again is shown as its own line where it is metered.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What happens if our stream goes down?

The player tries the fallback stream you configured and logs the switch. Listeners hear the backup rather than silence, and the station manager sees the event in the log.

Can presenters edit their own pages?

Yes. Each presenter account is scoped to the shows assigned to it, so a presenter can update their description, photo and playlist but cannot touch the schedule or other shows.

How long does listen-again stay available?

As long as the station manager sets. Each segment carries an expiry from the retention policy, and it is removed from the site automatically when the date passes.

Does it show the song playing right now?

With the now-playing add-on and a supported playout system, yes. Without it the player shows the current show and presenter from the schedule.

Is this a finished product I can see running?

Not yet. The readiness badge shows the real state: the package is a custom build assembled from our player, scheduling and forms modules for each station, and the example on this page is a labelled concept demo rather than a live station.

Our playout system is unusual. Can the site still read it?

Probably, but it is custom work. Writing a connector for a playout system outside the supported set is handled through the custom radio website service.
