Software package

Product comparison package

A ready-to-configure comparison platform where products carry schema-driven attributes with sources, prices arrive only from retailer feeds and show their source and fetch time, comparison tables are generated with differences highlighted, editorial verdicts carry a changelog, and affiliate links and sponsored slots are disclosed where they appear.

Readiness: Custom build Concept demo

Who it is for

Built for

A good fit

Affiliate publishers and comparison brands covering physical products: consumer electronics, home appliances, outdoor gear, baby equipment, tools, anything with a specification sheet and a handful of retailers. It suits publishers from a two-person site with a few categories to an editorial team with a data manager handling several feeds, editors who write and revise verdicts, data managers who match feed rows to products and maintain schemas, and readers who want to filter by attribute, compare two or three products side by side and see where a price came from.

Not the right fit

It is not for comparing plans and tariffs against a reader's own usage; that is the service comparison package. It is not a shop: nothing is sold or stocked on the platform, and every purchase happens on the retailer site. It is also not for a brand wanting to compare its own products against competitors on its own website, which is marketing content rather than a comparison platform.

The operational problem it solves

How it runs, step by step

Thursday, eight in the morning.

  1. The overnight feed runs have finished: three retailer feeds matched offers to existing products by identifier, updated prices and availability, and stored the fetch time against each.

  2. Fourteen rows could not be matched and sit in the data manager's queue; she matches nine to existing products, creates three new product records from the feed data with the feed named as the source for each attribute, and rejects two as accessories.

  3. One product now has a price that fell by a fifth overnight, so the price history shows it and a note goes to the editor whose roundup features it.

At ten an editor opens a review of a cordless vacuum that was published four months ago.

  1. The specification block is drawn from the product record, so the battery figure is the same as on every other page.

  2. She revises the verdict after a firmware update, the changelog records the date and the reason, and the page shows readers that it was updated.

  3. The roundup she maintains for that category has a sponsored slot sold until the end of the month; it is labelled on the page and the record of the sponsorship sits apart from her verdicts.

  4. At noon a reader filters the category by weight and run time, adds three vacuums to a comparison, and sees a table with the differing attributes highlighted and a line beneath it naming the sources and the dates of each value and each price.

  5. He clicks a retailer link that carries a disclosure beside it.

  6. In the afternoon a moderator approves two reader ratings against the published rule and rejects one that quotes a price.

  7. At five the publisher sees offers refreshed per feed, products with no current offer, comparisons built per category and outbound clicks per page.

Features

What the package does

The package ships as modules that follow the product record: schemas and products, feeds and offers, affiliate links and disclosure, comparison and filters, editorial reviews, reader ratings and moderation, and sponsorship and reporting. Each module below lists what it does; the comparison table shows which package variant includes it.

Directory and reviews

  • Attribute schema with version historyEach category defines its attributes with units and allowed values, and changes to the schema are kept in a version history.

Listings and search

  • Product records with sources and datesEvery attribute value on a product records where it came from and when, so a comparison can show its sources.

Integrations

  • Retailer feed importsOffers from retailer feeds are stored by feed, price, availability and the time they were fetched.

Catalogue and checkout

  • Managed affiliate links with disclosureAffiliate links are managed centrally and the disclosure appears beside each one.

Content and editorial

  • Generated comparison tablesTables are built from product records, highlight the differences and end with a line naming the sources.

Workflow and tasks

  • Attribute and availability filtersReaders filter each category by its attributes and by current availability.

Documents and cases

  • Editorial reviews with dated changelogEditors write reviews and verdicts, and each revision is recorded in a dated changelog.

Forms and requests

  • Reader ratings under a published ruleReaders submit ratings that are moderated against a published rule before they count.

Billing and payments

  • Labelled sponsored placementsSponsored slots are labelled, recorded with dates and kept separate from editorial verdicts.

Messaging and notifications

  • Price history and reader price alertsCharts show how an offer price has moved, and readers can ask for an email when a price changes.

Reporting and insights

  • Manufacturer specification import and click reportingSpecifications can be imported where a manufacturer source exists, and outbound clicks are reported per page and programme.

Ownership, maintenance and pricing

After the build

Deployment and ownership

The package runs on your own hosting or on hosting we manage; readers use the mobile web version and your team uses a browser. You own the code and your data in either case. Schemas, product records, offers with their history, reviews, ratings and sponsorship records can be exported at any time in standard formats, and nothing stops you moving the platform to another provider.

Maintenance

Maintenance is optional and scoped separately. When taken, it covers security updates, monitoring of feed runs, affiliate link rewriting and rating submissions, backups, and a monthly window for small changes such as a new attribute in a schema or a new feed in an existing format. Larger changes, such as a new category with its own schema and feeds, are quoted as change requests against the original scope.

Pricing model

Priced per proposal.

Sold as a one-off setup and customisation with optional monthly maintenance and hosting as separate recurring lines. The setup figure depends on the number of categories and schemas, the feeds and their formats, the affiliate programmes, the editorial workflow, the add-ons chosen and how much existing content is migrated. Affiliate income and sponsorship your platform earns are your own commercial model and unrelated to what you pay us. Each line is itemised in the proposal so recurring costs are never hidden in the setup.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can an editor type a price?

No. Prices come only from feed offers and every displayed price shows the feed and the fetch time. If no feed has an offer for a product, the page says there is no current price rather than showing an old one.

What happens when a schema changes?

A new schema version is created; existing product records keep their values under the old version until the data manager migrates them, and the comparison table only shows attributes present in both products. Nothing is lost silently and the version history shows who changed what.

How are reader ratings aggregated?

By a rule published on the site: which ratings count, how many are needed before an average is shown, and how reports are handled. Ratings wait in moderation, and rejected ratings carry a reason the moderator recorded.

How are sponsored slots kept apart from verdicts?

Sponsorship is its own record with dates, position and label; verdicts are editorial records with a changelog. A sponsored product can still carry an editorial verdict, but the page labels the slot, and the two records can be exported separately if anyone asks.

Does the package help pages rank in search engines?

It gives each product, category and comparison a crawlable page with structured product data, generated metadata and a sitemap that updates when records change. That is a structural capability; we make no claim about where those pages appear in any search engine.

Is this a finished product I can see running?

Not yet. The readiness badge shows the real state: the package is a custom build assembled from our directory, listings, content and orders modules for each publisher, and the screen on this page is a labelled concept demo rather than a live client platform. Anything beyond the listed options is scoped as custom product comparison platform development.
