Directories & comparison
Businesses that publish information about other businesses: directories where listings are claimed and enriched by their owners, comparison platforms where products or plans are set side by side from structured data, and review platforms where submissions pass through moderation and ratings follow a published rule.
How these businesses run their work
A directory or comparison operator sells trust in data it did not create. Listings come from suppliers, imports and the businesses themselves; specifications come from manufacturers and retailer feeds; plan terms come from providers; reviews come from the public. The operator's day is spent on the seams: deciding what gets in, who may change it, what is shown about where it came from, and what happens when two sources disagree. Every platform in this sector therefore starts with a schema per category, so a plumber, a packaging manufacturer, a psychotherapist, a cordless vacuum and a broadband plan each carry the fields that matter for them, and with import routines that deduplicate, flag missing data and queue changes for review rather than overwriting what an owner edited.
The second shared fact is that ownership and credentials are recorded, not vouched for. A business claims its listing by receiving a code through a channel already on the listing, its own domain, phone number or postal address, and the platform records which channel and when. A practitioner's qualifications and registration numbers are shown as supplied, with the date, and a plain statement of whether any register look-up was made. Plan terms are shown as the provider supplied them, with the date. Prices are never typed; they arrive from feeds and are displayed with the feed name and fetch time. The platform says exactly what it knows and no more.
Money in this sector comes from the listed side or from hand-offs, and both must be disclosed where they appear. Paid tiers and featured placement carry a visible label, a fixed number of positions and a published rule; sponsored sector pages and sponsored slots have dates the page enforces; affiliate links carry a disclosure beside them; results pages state their ordering rule and label results that earn commission. None of this is permitted to touch a rating or the order of reviews, and the published policy says so. This is the client platform charging its own listed businesses or earning from its own hand-offs, through its own payment provider; it is a capability we build and is entirely separate from how the agency bills for the build.
Finally, every platform here needs a moderation desk with reasons. Owner edits pass through a queue with a diff. Reviews show the route they arrived by, whether an invitation, a reference, a confirmed email or an open submission, and signals such as a burst from one network are shown to a moderator who acts with a reason from the published policy; the reviewer and the business can appeal, the business can reply, and the rating is calculated from approved reviews by a rule anyone can read. Pages are built crawlable with structured data and generated metadata as a matter of structure; what search engines do with them is not something any of these platforms can promise. These are the capabilities every topic in this sector shares; each then adds what makes it distinct, from area taxonomies and member exports to appointment requests, comparison tables and switching hand-offs.
