Law firm website development

For managing partners, practice managers and marketing leads at solicitors' firms, barristers' chambers and legal consultancies who need a website that routes the right enquiry to the right fee earner and presents the firm's regulatory information properly.

The problem

What goes wrong today

Where it usually starts

Most firm websites were built once, years ago, by whoever was available.

  • The practice-area pages are a wall of text, the team page lists people who have since left, and every enquiry form sends one email to a shared inbox that the receptionist checks between calls.
  • A conveyancing enquiry sits next to an employment claim with a looming time limit, and nobody can tell which came first or who picked it up.
  • Fee information lives in a PDF nobody remembers to update when a fixed-fee service changes.

Where it gets harder

Prospective clients email copies of tenancy agreements, bank statements and medical records to a general address because the site offers no secure way to send them.

  • The complaints procedure, the regulator's details and the professional indemnity wording sit in three different footers written at three different times.
  • When a practice-area lead asks why the firm's probate enquiries have fallen, there is no record of how many arrived, how quickly they were acknowledged or how many turned into a first appointment.

Scope of the service

What the build covers

A custom law firm website normally covers:

  • Practice-area pages each linked to the solicitors who work in that area
  • Solicitor profiles with qualifications Accreditations, areas of law and admission details in the firm's own wording
  • Fee information pages structured per service and written by the firm With the system never generating a figure
  • An enquiry flow That asks different questions per practice area and routes the result to named fee earners with a fallback when they are out of the office
  • A secure upload step With retention rules so attachments are held for a set period and then removed
  • Office pages with appointment request handling
  • One managed block for legal notices Complaints procedure and regulatory information that appears consistently across the site

We begin by mapping how an enquiry actually travels through the firm: who sees it first, whether a conflict check happens before anyone replies, how a first appointment is offered, and at what point the matter is opened in the practice system. Each handover becomes a named stage in the scope document.

Deliberately out of scope

  • Matter management, time recording, billing and client money, all of which belong in the firm's practice management system. The website hands an accepted enquiry over to that system rather than duplicating it

When the scope grows

Scoping scenario

A firm with four offices and eleven practice areas needs enquiries in family law routed to a different person per office, while commercial enquiries go to one partner regardless of location, and the site must display office-specific regulatory wording. That routing matrix, not the page design, is what makes it a custom project.

Deliverables

What you receive

  • Discovery notes mapping the enquiry journey from first contact to matter opening
  • A scope document naming each enquiry stage, the routing rules and what is out of scope
  • Design of the practice-area page, solicitor profile and enquiry flow on mobile and desktop
  • The build, deployed to your hosting or ours, with the regulatory information block managed in one place
  • Migration of existing pages, profiles and published articles where relevant
  • Training for the marketing administrator and practice-area leads, with a short written guide
  • Handover material and full ownership of the source code and your content

Process

How a project runs

Each stage maps onto the project view in your client panel. Durations are set in your proposal, never on this page.

  1. Onboarding

Access to the current site, analytics and any practice management system the enquiries should reach.

    Project stage: Onboarding
  2. Planning

Sessions with the practice manager and two practice-area leads to map routing, fee pages and regulatory wording; scope document agreed.

    Project stage: Planning
  3. Design

Clickable designs of a practice-area page, a solicitor profile and the enquiry flow, checked against the firm's brand guidelines.

    Project stage: Design
  4. Development

Built in stages: content structure and profiles first, then enquiry routing and secure upload, then the regulatory block and office pages.

    Project stage: Development
  5. Client review

Practice-area leads submit test enquiries through each path and confirm that the right person receives them with the right questions answered.

    Project stage: Client review
  6. Revisions

Routing, wording and layout changes from the review are made and re-checked against the scope document.

    Project stage: Revisions
  7. Ready for launch

Redirects from old URLs in place, retention rules tested on uploads, regulatory wording signed off by the compliance officer.

    Project stage: Ready for launch
  8. Delivered

The firm publishes through the new site; optional maintenance and hosting continue under their own agreement.

    Project stage: Delivered

Integrations

Commonly integrated

Systems this kind of business usually asks us to connect. Each integration is confirmed during discovery; none is assumed.

  • Practice management systems so an accepted enquiry becomes a matter without retyping
  • Email and calendar platforms for appointment requests and fee-earner availability
  • Secure file storage with retention policies for uploaded documents
  • Identity verification providers for onboarding checks the firm already uses
  • Review and feedback platforms the firm has chosen to display
  • Analytics with consent handling so enquiry counts per practice area can be reported

How we would approach it

Worked example

Concept demo

A four-office firm with office-specific family law routing

The situation

A firm with four offices wanted family law enquiries routed to a named solicitor in whichever office the enquirer chose, with commercial enquiries going to one partner for the whole firm.

Why it is a custom build

The reason this needs a custom build rather than a template is the routing table and its fallbacks; most website builders send every form to one address and leave the sorting to a person.

The scope we would propose

  • An enquiry flow that asks for the preferred office only when the practice area is office-based
  • A routing table maintained by the practice manager rather than hard-coded
  • A holiday fallback per route
  • A regulatory information block that swaps the office-specific wording while keeping the firm-wide complaints procedure identical everywhere

Pricing

What affects the price

Every proposal is priced on scope. These are the factors that move it most for this kind of build.

  • Number of practice areas and offices, and whether routing differs between them
  • Number of solicitor profiles and how much existing content is migrated
  • Secure document upload and the retention rules required
  • Whether enquiries hand over to a practice management system automatically
  • Fee information pages: how many services and how often the firm changes them
  • Regulatory wording that varies by office or by regulated entity
  • Multilingual content for firms serving particular communities
  • Hosting choice: your own hosting or ours

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a custom website or will the package do?

During discovery we check how your enquiries actually move through the firm against what the law firm website package handles with configuration. A single office with straightforward routing is usually a package fit; office-dependent routing, unusual fee structures or a handover into an existing matter system point towards a custom build, and we say which.

Can enquirers send documents securely?

Yes. The enquiry flow can include an upload step that stores files encrypted, notifies the routed fee earner and deletes the files after a retention period you set. Who can download them is controlled per practice area.

Will the site publish fee information for us?

It gives you a structured page per service where you write your own fee wording, what is included and what is excluded. The system never generates a figure; it only presents what the firm enters and shows when it was last reviewed.

Does the website handle regulatory compliance for us?

No software can do that. What the build provides is a single managed block for the complaints procedure, regulator details and insurance wording so the firm maintains it once, plus a review date so the compliance officer knows when it was last checked. The content and its accuracy remain the firm's responsibility.

Who owns the site afterwards?

You do. The source code and all content are handed over at delivery, and hosting and maintenance are optional, separately agreed and movable to another provider.
