Service

Recycling company website development

For owners and site managers of recycling yards, scrap metal merchants, materials recovery facilities and specialist recyclers who want material streams, collections, weighbridge tickets, trade accounts and certificates designed around how loads actually move through their site, rather than a weighbridge printer and a spreadsheet.

The problem

What goes wrong today

Where it usually starts

A metals and cardboard recycler with a weighbridge, two collection lorries and forty trade accounts prices material on a whiteboard by the gate.

  • A trade customer rings to book a skip exchange; the office writes it in a diary and tells the driver in the morning.
  • A load arrives, the weighbridge prints a ticket with gross, tare and net, the operator writes the grade and a contamination deduction on it by hand, and the ticket goes into a tray.
  • At the end of the month the office types the tray into a spreadsheet to raise statements, and the trade customer disputes three tickets because the grade on their copy differs from the grade typed in.
  • A household customer who dropped off copper paid by bank transfer under a reference nobody can match.

Where it gets harder

Certificates of recycling for a corporate client are assembled by hand from the tickets, and one is sent with the wrong tonnage because a ticket was in the wrong tray.

  • The carrier registration number sits on the website but the expiry date is in nobody's calendar.
  • The site manager does not know current stock of each grade in each bay without walking the yard, and the baler schedule is guesswork.
  • The owner knows margin lives in the grade, the deduction and the weight, and that all three are being recorded on paper.

Scope of the service

What the build covers

A custom recycling build normally covers:

  • A material catalogue with streams Grades, acceptance conditions and the indicative prices or price-on-enquiry status entered by the business, shown on the public site exactly as entered
  • Collection booking For trade and household customers with skip or container type, access notes and preferred days, and drop-off booking with time slots where the yard limits traffic
  • A collection schedule with lorries Drivers and container stock as capacity, round sheets for drivers and container movements recorded at delivery, exchange and collection
  • A load ticket per arrival with gross Tare and net weights read from the weighbridge where it publishes an interface or entered by the operator, the material, grade, deduction and photographs, linked to the booking, the trade account and the container
  • Stock by material Grade and bay built from tickets in and dispatch tickets out
  • Trade accounts with agreed price schedules Credit terms, monthly statements built from tickets and dispute handling per ticket
  • Certificates of recycling or destruction generated From the tickets they cover
  • Carrier Permit and insurance details displayed on the site as supplied with their expiry dates recorded

How discovery works

Discovery follows one load from booking to the statement with you: how collections are booked and routed, how containers are tracked, what the weighbridge operator records and how grade and deductions are decided, how prices are agreed with trade accounts, how statements and certificates are built and how disputes are settled. Each becomes a named stage in the scope document: book, collect, receive, weigh, grade, ticket, stock, dispatch, state, certify.

Deliberately out of scope

  • The weighbridge hardware and its calibration, the official waste tracking and permit systems themselves, which are recorded against the load with references where required but completed on the official platforms, and accounting

When the scope grows

Scoping scenario

A multi-site group with a transfer station feeding a processing plant, inter-site transfers that must not be double counted, a baler and shredder with output grades different from input grades, and buyers who collect baled material against purchase orders needs inter-site movement tickets, processing records that convert input stock to output stock and a sales side with dispatch tickets against buyer orders. That is a different build from a single yard, and the scope document says so.

Deliverables

What you receive

  • Discovery notes from following one load from booking to the trade statement
  • A written scope document naming each stage, the ticket and grading rules and what is out of scope
  • Design of the weighbridge ticket screen, the driver round sheet, the collection diary, the trade account statement and the public materials page on phone, yard tablet and desktop
  • The build, deployed to your hosting or ours
  • Migration of trade accounts, price schedules, container records and historic tickets from your spreadsheet or weighbridge software, where practical
  • Training for the weighbridge operator, drivers, the office and the site manager, with a short written guide
  • Handover material and full ownership of the source code and your data

Process

How a project runs

Each stage maps onto the project view in your client panel. Durations are set in your proposal, never on this page.

  1. Onboarding

Access, contacts, the materials list and price board, the collection diary, sample tickets and statements, and what the weighbridge software can export.

    Project stage: Onboarding
  2. Planning

Discovery with the owner, the site manager and the weighbridge operator; the ticket model, grading rules, statement cycle and scope document are agreed with a milestone plan.

    Project stage: Planning
  3. Design

Clickable designs of the ticket screen at the weighbridge, the driver round sheet on a phone, the collection diary and the trade statement, checked in the yard with gloves on.

    Project stage: Design
  4. Development

Built in stages: materials, grades and trade accounts first, then bookings and the collection schedule, then tickets and stock, then statements, disputes and certificates.

    Project stage: Development
  5. Client review

The yard runs a fortnight of real loads through the system alongside the paper tray, including one month-end statement compared line by line with the old spreadsheet, and tells us where it does not match the gate.

    Project stage: Client review
  6. Revisions

Ticket fields, grade and deduction rules, round sheet layout and statement format are adjusted from the review and re-checked against the scope document.

    Project stage: Revisions
  7. Ready for launch

Accounts and historic tickets migrated, weighbridge connection tested on live loads, statement numbering agreed with your accountant, launch checklist signed off.

    Project stage: Ready for launch
  8. Delivered

The yard runs on the new system; optional maintenance and hosting continue under their own agreement.

    Project stage: Delivered

Integrations

Commonly integrated

Systems this kind of business usually asks us to connect. Each integration is confirmed during discovery; none is assumed.

  • Weighbridge indicators and software where an interface or export is published, for reading weights into the ticket
  • Official waste tracking and permit systems where an interface is published, for recording references against loads
  • Card payment providers and open banking for household payments and trade account settlement
  • Vehicle tracking already fitted to the lorries, for round progress
  • SMS and email providers for collection confirmations, ticket copies and statement delivery
  • Accounting software for statements, invoices and purchase ledger entries for material bought
  • Market price feeds the business subscribes to, for reference when setting its own prices
  • Camera systems at the weighbridge for load photographs attached to tickets

How we would approach it

Worked example

Concept demo

A two-site group with a transfer station, processing and baled sales

The situation

A group ran a transfer station in one town feeding a processing site with a baler and shredder in another, and sold baled material to buyers who collected against purchase orders. Stock was counted twice when a load moved between sites, processing output was never reconciled to input, and buyers' dispatch weights were argued over.

Why it is a custom build

This needs a custom build because material changes identity and site between arrival and sale, which a single-yard ticket system does not model.

The scope we would propose

  • Inter-site transfer tickets that move stock from one site to the other without a sale
  • Processing records that consume input grades and produce output grades with the operator recording the run
  • A sales side with buyer orders, dispatch tickets weighed out at the bridge and a sales statement per buyer
  • Stock by site, grade and bay reconciled from receipts, transfers, processing and dispatches
  • Certificates that trace a corporate client's loads through the transfer station to the processed output

Pricing

What affects the price

Every proposal is priced on scope. These are the factors that move it most for this kind of build.

  • Number of sites, weighbridges and whether the bridge publishes an interface
  • Number of material streams and grades and whether prices are posted or on enquiry
  • Collections with lorries, drivers and container tracking, or drop-off only
  • Trade accounts with price schedules, statements and dispute handling
  • Certificates of recycling or destruction generated from tickets
  • Processing records and a sales side with buyer dispatches
  • Official tracking and permit references recorded against loads
  • Volume of accounts, containers and historic tickets to migrate
  • Hosting choice: your own hosting or ours

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Would the package do, or do we need a custom build?

A single-yard recycler with a weighbridge, a materials list, collections and trade accounts is usually well served by the recycling services package configured with your streams, grades and price schedules. Custom work is the honest answer for multi-site groups with transfers and processing, businesses selling processed output against buyer orders, or specialist recyclers whose certificates must trace individual items such as IT equipment. Discovery settles it before anything is quoted.

Do prices on the website update automatically?

No. The public materials page shows the prices or price-on-enquiry status your office enters, with the date they were last changed. Market feeds you subscribe to can be shown to your staff for reference, but nothing is published without a person changing it.

How are carrier and permit details handled?

As records: registration numbers, permit references, insurance details and their expiry dates, entered by you and displayed on the site as supplied, with reminders before expiry. The official registrations are made on the official systems; the build records and displays, it does not verify or certify.

Can the weighbridge feed weights straight into the ticket?

Where the indicator or its software publishes an interface or an export, yes, and the operator confirms rather than types the weight. Where it does not, the operator enters the printed weights and the ticket records who entered them, with a photograph of the display if you want that as evidence.

Who owns the system afterwards?

You do. Source code, trade account records, tickets, stock history, statements and certificates are handed over at delivery; hosting and maintenance are optional and separately agreed.
