Heritage on the surface, services underneath
Chester has been lived in continuously since the Romans built a fortress here, and the visitor trade shows it. Visit Cheshire points to the most complete Roman walls in Britain, the black-and-white timbered Rows, the amphitheatre, the largest ever excavated in the country, and a cathedral famous for its medieval carvings. Racing on the Roodee, the oldest racecourse still in use in the country, and Chester Zoo, run by the North of England Zoological Society as a conservation charity, bring in crowds well beyond the city walls.
Behind the shopfronts the economy is more varied than the postcards suggest. The Victoria County History notes that in the late twentieth century employment rested on retailing, tourism, the professions and the public sector, and that Chester became an important provider of financial services as several national firms arrived. Much of that growth centred on Chester Business Park, opened in 1988 beyond the southern outskirts of the city, east of Wrexham Road.
Education and engineering widen the mix again. The University of Chester traces its history back to 1839, and Airbus describes its Broughton site in Wales, a short way west of the city, as a centre of excellence for wing manufacturing. For a Chester firm, that means customers who range from day visitors to compliance teams, often in the same week.
