Weather, climate and research on the doorstep
The Met Office, the national weather service, has its headquarters on FitzRoy Road in Exeter. Its work spans forecasting, climate research and specialist services for aviation, marine, rail, road, energy and media customers, and that concentration of environmental science has shaped the city's identity. For smaller firms it opens room to build products and consultancy on weather and climate data, or to sell services to the organisations that use it.
The University of Exeter, a Russell Group member, has two of its three campuses in the city and its third at Penryn in Cornwall, with tens of thousands of students and thousands of staff. Exeter Science Park describes itself as the South West's centre of activity for businesses in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine, offering offices and laboratories, a SETsquared incubator and space within the Exeter and East Devon Enterprise Zone.
Exeter is also the administrative heart of Devon. Devon County Council runs county-wide services from County Hall on Topsham Road, so councils, health partners, charities and the advisers who work with them all deal with the city regularly. Add a cathedral that has been at the heart of Devon for nearly a thousand years, and Exeter mixes research, public service and a visitor trade in one compact place.
