Insurance, science and a thousand-year-old city centre
Few UK cities have a single industry woven so closely into their history. In 1797 Thomas Bignold founded the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Society in the city, and Norwich Union went on to become part of the group renamed Aviva in 2002. The Norwich Union name has since given way to Aviva, but insurance remains part of the city's story, and the brokers, claims handlers and advisers who work in that world have software needs of their own.
Norwich Research Park, which shares its address with the UEA campus, brings together the University of East Anglia, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and four independent institutes: the John Innes Centre, the Quadram Institute, the Earlham Institute and The Sainsbury Laboratory. The park describes itself as one of the largest single-site concentrations of research in food, genomics and health in Europe, and it hosts a community of around fifty businesses, many grown from that research.
The historic centre adds a third layer. Visit Norwich promotes a city with more than a thousand years of history, from the Normans to the Tudors, with Norwich Castle, the market and the independent shops of the Norwich Lanes at its heart. Retailers, cafés, venues and attractions there need software that is as distinctive as the streets they trade on.
