Local context
Roman capital, garrison city, technology park
Colchester occupies the site of Camulodunum, the first major city of Roman Britain and its first capital. Colchester Castle, built in the eleventh century on Roman foundations, now houses a museum whose star exhibits include the Colchester Gladiator Vase and the Fenwick Hoard of Roman treasure. Heritage, the zoo and the surrounding countryside bring a steady stream of visitors, and many hospitality and leisure businesses trade on them.
The city has been a military town since Roman times, and Colchester Garrison is currently home to 16 Air Assault Brigade. It sits on the River Colne about fifty miles north-east of London, linked by the A12 and the Great Eastern Main Line, within easy reach of the port of Harwich and London Stansted Airport. Military postings mean households arriving and leaving through the year, which shapes demand for lettings, removals, childcare and other family services.
On the University of Essex's Colchester Campus, the Knowledge Gateway research and technology park aims at knowledge-based science, technology and digital creative companies. It draws on the university's research in artificial intelligence, data science and life sciences, and it includes an Innovation Centre for growing firms. That gives Colchester a cluster of young technology businesses alongside its traditional trades and services.
