Freight shapes the East Midlands more than most regions. East Midlands Airport describes itself as the UK's largest dedicated cargo airport and a key player in global express freight, serving as a central hub for DHL, UPS, FedEx and Royal Mail. Around it, the East Midlands Freeport, the only inland freeport in the UK, brings together the airport and its gateway industrial cluster, the Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station site and the East Midlands Intermodal Park.
Governance has changed too. The East Midlands Combined County Authority, led by Mayor Claire Ward, now covers Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Derby and Nottingham, with programmes for transport, skills and employment, housing and regeneration, green growth and the wider economy. Leicester, Leicestershire and Lincoln sit alongside, each with its own mix of industry and services.
Food and countryside are part of the picture as well. Stilton cheese carries protected designation of origin status, so it can only be made in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire to long-established recipes, a reminder of how much the region's farms and dairies matter. In the north-west of the region, the official tourist board for the Peak District and Derbyshire lists self-catering cottages, inns with rooms, walking and cycling providers, attractions and food and drink businesses, each of which needs a way to be found and booked.
