Local context
Big brands, two universities and a creative quarter
Invest in Nottingham lists Experian, Boots, Center Parcs, Capital One, Ideagen and Paul Smith among the major brands the city is home to, alongside a newer generation of creative enterprises. Its priority sectors are creative and digital, life sciences, advanced manufacturing, financial and business services, logistics, and food and drink, and it highlights both Nottingham Trent University and the University of Nottingham as sources of talent and research.
Health innovation has a long record here. The city points out that ibuprofen and the MRI scanner were both invented in Nottingham, and it continues to link industry and healthcare providers with its two universities and its NHS trust. Business support comes through Medilink East Midlands and through the life science and healthcare hubs at BioCity Nottingham and MediCity, where young health companies can find peers, advice and room to grow.
Heritage and leisure add another layer. Visit Nottinghamshire steers people to the Lace Market and Hockley, the story of Nottingham lace, Nottingham Castle, the City of Caves and a long list of Robin Hood attractions and tours. Further north, Sherwood Forest and the Major Oak are among the county's best-known attractions, so accommodation, food and activity businesses well beyond the city boundary depend on visitors too.
