Logistics

Businesses that move or hold goods and people against a promise about time and place: parcel couriers and delivery operators, local and urgent courier firms, haulage brokers and freight exchanges, airport transfer and chauffeur operators, and warehouses, 3PLs and fulfilment houses.

How these businesses run their work

A logistics business sells a movement: this consignment to that door by Thursday, a van at the warehouse between nine and ten, six pallets to a distribution centre, two passengers from arrivals to a hotel, forty order lines picked and on the courier before the cut-off. Each movement passes through a chain of hands, vehicles and buildings, and at every hand-off something is scanned, signed, counted or simply remembered. Almost every operational failure in this sector is a hand-off that was not recorded: the parcel sorted to the wrong route at six in the morning, the pallet that did not fit the van, the quote nobody wrote down, the driver waiting for a flight that landed late, the item that was in stock on the spreadsheet and not on the shelf.

The first shared capability is therefore a status record that follows the thing being moved. A consignment, a job, a load, a journey and an order each have a lifecycle with named states, and each state change carries who did it, when and where, with a photo or signature where proof matters. The systems we scope in this sector give the people on the floor and on the road a page that works with one thumb on a phone, so recording the hand-off is quicker than not recording it. Recipients, shippers, passengers and clients then see the status themselves instead of ringing someone who has to ring someone else.

The second is pricing and capacity owned by the operator. Courier tariffs by distance, vehicle type and service level, transfer route tables by vehicle class, freight quotes with validity periods, 3PL tariffs per pallet-day and pick: these are entered and changed by the business, applied consistently to the web booking, the phone booking and the invoice, and checked against real capacity such as vehicles of a class, drivers within rest rules or bins in a zone. Service levels are the operator's own promises, configured and recorded; the software shows what is at risk rather than making promises on the business's behalf.

Third, exceptions are part of the normal day. A failed delivery, a short delivery, a delayed flight, a lapsed insurance certificate or a stock variance each needs a queue, an owner and a set of outcomes rather than a phone call and a note. Finally, the sector lives on account relationships: shippers with bulk imports, corporate bookers with cost centres, agents on commission, carriers on subscription and storage clients on monthly bills, each wanting a login that shows only their own items and an invoice derived from the recorded events. Each topic in this sector then adds what makes its day different, from the courier's dispatcher board to the warehouse's cycle count.
