Local context
Growers, engines and a festival theatre
Horticulture is woven into the economy around the city. The West Sussex Growers' Association, a specialist horticultural branch of the National Farmers' Union, counts more than fifty members in and around the city. They grow everything from ornamental plants, shrubs and trees to vegetables, herbs, soft fruit, tomatoes and peppers, and the membership also takes in consultants, colleges, specialist hauliers and suppliers of growing media, crop protection and beneficial insects.
North of the city lies the Goodwood estate, home of the Festival of Speed, the Goodwood Revival and the Members' Meeting, as well as a motor circuit, an aerodrome, restaurants and a busy filming and hospitality business. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is at Goodwood too, at the site it calls the Home of Rolls-Royce, where its bespoke coachbuild work is carried out. Events of that scale draw on caterers, hauliers, hotels and specialist suppliers from right across the district.
The city itself has a cathedral with more than 900 years of history, Chichester Festival Theatre, the annual Festival of Chichester and the University of Chichester. Several marinas and their associated trades operate in the area, and tourism, public services and a growing number of self-employed people make up much of the local workforce.
