Heritage, professions and a rural hinterland
Winchester City Council describes an economy built on five main sectors: knowledge and creative industries, retail, tourism and recreation, public administration and business services, and land-based industries. The city centre is busy with professional firms, retailers and public sector organisations.
Visitors are central to the city's trade. Winchester Cathedral has welcomed people for more than 900 years, and the calendar includes the Hat Fair, the Winchester Writers' Festival, the Theatre Royal and the Winchester Criterium cycle race, with Marwell Zoo nearby. In 2026 the council launched a Winchester District Tourism Strategy, supported by the Hampshire Local Visitor Economy Partnership, that aims to increase the value of the visitor economy while protecting the district's character and promoting experiences all year round.
Education and the countryside complete the picture. The district has the University of Winchester, the Winchester School of Art campus of the University of Southampton, Winchester College and Sparsholt College, a land-based college teaching countryside, zoo, fisheries and aquatics management. The city is a gateway to the South Downs National Park, and a thriving rural economy supports the high-quality food and drink the area is known for.
