Local context
Cathedral, market and laboratories
Salisbury Cathedral is the city's best-known landmark, with Britain's tallest spire, its largest cathedral close and cloisters, the world's oldest mechanical clock and the best-preserved original 1215 Magna Carta. The cathedral promotes visits alongside nearby Stonehenge, and the city centre around the Market Square supports its charter market, a strong mix of independent shops, cafés and pubs, and a calendar of festivals and seasonal events.
Just outside the city, the Porton Down science campus hosts two government organisations: the Ministry of Defence's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory and the UK Health Security Agency. Porton Science Park, a newer addition on the campus, offers laboratories and offices for health, life-science and defence technology companies and holds UK Life Science Opportunity Zone status. MoD Boscombe Down, home to QinetiQ and the Empire Test Pilots' School, adds military aircraft testing to the local mix.
Healthcare and the armed forces complete the picture. Experience Salisbury names Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Salisbury District Hospital, as the biggest employer in the area, with specialist services including burns and plastic surgery and a spinal treatment centre that covers most of southern England. Salisbury Plain is the UK's largest military training area, and Bulford and Tidworth have merged into a single Salisbury super garrison. Wiltshire College and University Centre has a Salisbury campus with new life-science laboratories.
