Where research, publishing and manufacturing meet
Oxford City Council describes a diverse sector profile shaped by two forces: the universities and the city's long association with vehicle manufacturing. Education is by far the most concentrated sector compared with the national average, followed by information and communication and then health. Higher education at the University of Oxford and Oxford Brookes University accounts for a large share of local jobs, and the city is a major centre for teaching hospitals and specialist medical organisations whose research links closely with the universities.
From that base has grown a biotechnology cluster with strengths in drug discovery and development, diagnostics, medical technology and imaging, alongside digital firms working in cyber security, big data and games. Further south in Oxfordshire, the Harwell campus brings together organisations working on energy, space, health and quantum computing. Oxford is also the largest centre of publishing in the UK outside London, led by Oxford University Press, and Oxford Brookes runs the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies.
Manufacturing remains part of the picture. BMW's MINI Plant Oxford at Cowley occupies close to half of the city's industrial space and exports most of the cars it builds, and the county sits at the heart of the high-performance engineering cluster known as Motorsport Valley. Add a visitor economy that makes the city a gateway to the rest of Oxfordshire, including Blenheim Palace and Bicester Village, and a professional services sector serving all of the above.
